How Do You Think Young M.A Scored On Her ’90s Hip-Hop Test? (Video)

Unique promotion for that ‘Unsolved’ limited series presented by USA Network. And very interesting. She’s a ’90s baby… and she knows her Golden Era. Pretty good M.A #Salute

The Brooklyn rapper has been noted by fans for her sound that’s reminiscent of ‘90s rap, so Genius decided to test her knowledge on the decade with a round of trivia with Hip-Hop icon Redman.

Red with the ding-ding-ding-ding gameshow effect is hilarious, too (haha)!

Producer Ron Browz Declares That He Gave The ‘Ether’ Beat To Jay-Z Before Nas Back In The Day (Video)

Man. Just think back to how hard the ‘Takeover’ came in for that JiggaNas battle back a good while ago. That was an ouch hit, definitely leaving a mark and making Nasir wobble. But then came ‘Ether’… that KNOCKOUT!! And Nas wins hands down with the Hip-Hop ‘hands’ that song put on Jay. But what if Jay was the one that dropped fire on that beat? Would Nas be the one that history records got ‘Ethered’ (hmmm)?

Harlem producer Ron Browz has produced for some heavyweights in the industry. He sat with Sway In The Morning to talk about his career and production credits for iconic songs like ‘Ether.’

Chef Leah Chase Gives Us Some ‘Gumbo 101’ Schooling Straight From The Kitchen (Video)

This is beautiful all by itself. The Sister-Mother chef will school on all kinds of foodie knowledge (esp. gumbo). But I just needed to hear ONE thing (that I have known since my elders taught me): Okraaaaaa! Gumbo means OKRAAAAA! Facts.

(Full disclosure: I love okra.)

What goes into an authentic Louisiana Gumbo? In restaurants, kitchens, and cookbooks all over America, you find menu items masquerading as Louisiana Gumbo. So, how do you know it’s the real thing? The iconic Queen of Creole Cuisine, New Orleans Chef Leah Chase has the scoop on gumbo and shows us at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant.

Watch this video to make sure your next bowl is the real deal.

Food: Republic Of Booza Serves 500-Year-Old Ice Cream (Video)

Looks more like taffy than ice cream. But if they say it’s ice cream… Okay. In fact, the Instagram page (here) says it is the ORIGINAL ice cream.

(Now, I admit, it does look tasty; whatever it is.)

What’s The Story Behind The Bean Pie? (Video)

The only legitimate American Muslim food. The bean pie. Never thought about how I have never seen the story told online until now. And I like bean pie; so much so I am probably going to go looking for where I can get one now #BecauseDelicious

Why “40 Acres And A Mule” Is No Longer Enough Reparations For Black Americans (Video)

Word on the street, dirt road… hell, everywhere… is that that 40 acres and a mule promised to Black folks in the United States… IS. NOT. COMING. And even if it was, it would NOT be enough to ‘catch us up’ and make things fair & square for how far slavery, Jim Crow, and follow-on disenfranchisement has set people of color (esp. Black people in America) back. The ‘why’ behind this is skillfully “Decoded” above in this throwback episode.

Out of 536 billionaires in the USA, only 3 are Black. Why the stark racial divide? Well, it’s complicated, but it turns out our history of racism has a lot to do with it. From segregated schools that receive less funding in property taxes, to the history of redlining Black homeowners, to the long history of slavery, oppression, and segregation, White families were accumulating wealth. That “old money” has provided the capital for the modern-day billionaires, and even average-income white families, to stay significantly ahead of Black Americans. So how can we fix the wealth divide in America?

The Story Of How Models Helped Hip-Hop Stars Make Videos That Made Money… Until The Game Changed (Trailer)

VIXEN. Simple, powerful title. Makes sense with coverage of Karrine Steffans (and her book) in this.

Saw this described elsewhere as exploring the ‘Video Vixen Era.’ Never thought of it as an era, but the MODELS (not the rappers or singers) in music videos that caught major buzz before Instagram… yeah, that’s a thing. Should make for some worthwhile watching. That, plus sexy women…

Melyssa Ford, Buffie The Body, Karrine Steffans and more video vixens write themselves back into Hip-Hop history in this BET Original Documentary.

Racist History Of American Medicine (Documentary Short)

You don’t have to tell me about racism in medicine and research. I. Am. From. Tuskegee, Alabama! Watch the video and you will learn why that matters, too.

People of color in the U.S. have endured centuries of abuse in the name of science. It’s time we stop celebrating this blatantly racist history.

Okay, so Vlad TV is giving tube time to Jay Morrison to speak on the Tulsa Real Estate Fund. Interesting.

Robert Reich Raises The Question: Is Trump The Worst President In History? (Video)

Wonder how he really feels. Joking! There is no doubt about Reich’s position on President Trump’s performance and his place among the ranks of U.S. Presidents throughout the country’s history.

America has had its share of crooks (Warren G. Harding, Richard Nixon), bigots (Andrew Jackson, James Buchanan), and incompetents (Andrew Johnson, George W. Bush). But never before Donald Trump have we had a president who combined all these nefarious qualities.

Queen’s New Biopic, “Bohemian Rhapsody” (Trailer)

Okay, so we can mark one dope film coming out in November. Looks like the film will be an epic retelling of the come-up story of Freddie Mercury and Queen.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” is a foot-stomping celebration of Queen, their music, and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury, who defied stereotypes and shattered convention to become one of the most beloved entertainers on the planet. The film traces the meteoric rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound, their near-implosion as Mercury’s lifestyle spirals out of control, and their triumphant reunion on the eve of Live Aid, where Mercury, facing a life-threatening illness, leads the band in one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music. In the process, cementing the legacy of a band that was always more like a family, and who continue to inspire outsiders, dreamers and music lovers to this day.

Back Story Of The Israel-Palestine Conflict (Video)

Peace in the Middle East. We got used to saying the phrase; praying for it to become a reality. If you already know the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, good on you for being informed. I will admit to not knowing. I came across many storytellings like this on YouTube. Though I do not claim the expertise to declare it absolutely so, this one seems to speak to the true history in an even-toned manner.

Latest Teaser For John Travolta’s “Gotti” (Trailer)

“Gotti” comes to the big screens on June 15th, and the flick is looking pretty damn tough. Travolta has played gangster roles before, but they were nowhere near as heavy, or REAL, as the head of the Gambino Crime Family. Take a peek.

Natives Speak On Being Indigenous, Invisible, And Not ‘American’ (Video)

Damn. In America, Black folks are regular ‘property’ and the Indigenous Peoples are the ‘exotics’ though? Still sorting my feelings about that comment. But this is a convo we need to have and keep having.

Native Americans challenge their invisibility in society.
– Op-Docs

And what about a Black Indigenous mixed heritage. They talk about that, too. Remember that post that actually addressed Black people’s roots in America; a Native heritage (here)? Interesting. Discuss.

We’ve posted on activist/educator Dr. Bernard LaFayette on here, a close associate of Dr. MLK Jr. back in the day. Bet money he could speak on this and more (and he might). But let’s see what this HBO joint has to say. Looks intriguing.

Coming in April, this documentary follows Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the last few years of his life, from the vital role he played in the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to his assassination in 1968.

Mark Ronson Speaks On How Sampling Transformed Music (Video)

Okay, grant me a late pass on this one, but this a dope TED Talk on sampling and the evolution of modern music. Presented by Mark Ronson.

Sampling isn’t about “hijacking nostalgia wholesale,” says Mark Ronson. It’s about inserting yourself into the narrative of a song while also pushing that story forward. Watch the DJ scramble 15 TED Talks into an audio-visual omelette, and trace the evolution of “La Di Da Di,” Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick’s 1984 hit that has been reimagined for every generation since.

That Time Roxanne Shante Ran Up On KRS-ONE Over ‘The Bridge Is Over’ Diss (Video)

Really? BDP wanted to be in the Juice Crew? Hmmm. Kinda got me *sideeye* over here hearing that…

But, Roxanne Shante has the mic. So we gotta respect it. ‘The Bridge Is Over’ …but the talk about the legendary beef, by the legend that got dissed… that wasn’t over… by a long shot! Got squashed though.

Roxanne Shante spoke openly with VladTV about the beef that started between The Juice Crew and Boogie Down Productions, which spawned the classic diss track, “The Bridge is Over.” Shante went on to explain how she even stepped to KRS One a few weeks after the track was released when she ran into him at the bank. Watch the interview footage above.
