Leslie “Big Lez” Segar Speaks On Nas’ & “Illmatic” (Video)

I listen to music, obviously, from my hips rather than my ears, because I’m a dancer…

And what lovely hips they are, Leslie. Make me wanna sing to them. Have mercy!

Give me a late pass… mainly because Big Lez is so gaaadaaamn SEXY! Plus she is speaking on Nas’ “Illmatic” as one of her ‘Best Albums’ ever. So appropriate that this happened to be Episode 25 in a series since this is the 25th year since the release of “Illmatic.”

Leslie #BigLez Segar picks #Nas’ #Illmatic for her episode of #BestAlbums. The #Queens #NewYork #dancer & #radiohost explains why she feels a #deep #connection to the #album. She also talks about the power of #NYStateOfMind #LifesABitch & #TheWorldIsYours, as well as the production work of #DJPremier #PeteRock & #QTip.
– Unique Access Ent.

Great interview! And I remember the ‘wooooow’ feeling I got when I learned that that was Nas’ dad playing him out on “Life’s A B!tch.” Beautiful song!

In The Studio: !llmind (Video)

Output is not doing any ‘blind picks’ here. The producer is allowed to be who they ‘be’ in making fire beats. Check out this latest ep of ‘In the Studio’ with !llmind.

The multi-platinum Grammy-winning producer behind Beyonce and Jay-Z and Huncho Jack drops into Output’s studio to make a beat with Exhale.

Leave some space for the vocalist… Don’t over-produce… JEWELS!

Some wise words well spoken #wwws by this weathered wizard of music making. Take heed, beatsmiths!

Presenting Miss Info, One Of The Architects of “Illmatic” (Video)

The 5 mics was right… There’s no person that this can’t touch.

YES! Speak on it, Shortie.

“It did not feel like something that was created in a boardroom. It felt like it was happening… like a storm.” The legendary Miss Info remembers penning her storied “5 mic” Illmatic review for ‘The Source’ under her “Shortie” moniker before the album was out in ’94. That moment changed two industries forever: Hip-Hop and Hip-Hop journalism.
– Mass Appeal

You did not think she was just a blogger, did you? Naaaah, son. Miss Info was Miss ‘It Thang’ in several circles back in the day. And she called it on “Illmatic,” declaring the LP worthy of a rare rating of 5 (out of 5) mics in THE Hip-Hop magazine of the era. Shortie aka Miss Info had the ear, demonstrating that early on, and earned the juice going forward. With such stripes in the game, you need to listen to her speak on this. Kind of ‘made’ a career for herself and Nassir.

Presenting L.E.S., One Of The Architects of “Illmatic” (Video)

Yeah, Nassir doing a live performance of singles from the Hip-Hop classic LP he birthed goes way beyond ‘Mass Appeal’… but the channel has it covered. Especially with post-event commentary from one the “Illmatic” LP’s architects, L.E.S.

“Man, when I heard he was performing it… I was actually like, ‘What is going on?’” L.E.S. remembers the night Nas immortalized ‘Illmatic’ in the annals of live music when he played the album at The Kennedy Center with the National Symphony Orchestra as his backing band.

4-IZE – “You A Shooter” (Freestyle) [Video]

Real talk I need y’all to understand: These 4-IZE freestyles often make me go back and listen to the actual original tracks to see what the original song sounds like… and sometimes… Nah, not gonna say it. Just know that 4-IZE stacks up to everyone he is rapping after on these instrumentals. Respek on his name for that alone!

ALL CAPS, no cap: BoneBreaker Jones, Sam Peezy, J-Sun KOA, GreaseKydz & Sikz Earned My RESPECT

Above: J-Sun on the left, Sikz on the right, and all the GreaseKydz right down the middle from front to back (Tea Bag da Herbalist, Shawty Plx, Expo, Phobro da Ab)!

…and that was waaay before this past Friday night! That is why I extended an invitation for each of them to give a feature LIVE performance at the 16th Anniversary Celebration of The Remix, one of Atlanta’s best and longest-running Hip-Hop radio shows. When @ATLRemix gave me the green light to program the first hour of the six-hour event with a live cypher-inspired lineup, I immediately reached out to the talented folks who showed love, showed up, and showed out on my dream mixtape “Livin Proof” Rebooth LP project (posted on here a few years back). When I could not pay them anything more than RESPECT, they did that for me. And though my pockets are still hella lean and linty, I still have RESPECT, with interest, for all these guys (including post-Rebooth newcomer Sikz). RESPECT earned, RESPECT due, RESPECT paid… In that way, me and mine are very wealthy indeed (RESPECT stays being paid). And the night of the event, the brothers showed love, showed up, and showed out like I knew they would (and then some)!

Sidebar: RESPECT is crucial, you see. So much so, RESPECT! was the theme for our portion of the Anniversary Celebration event; a program within a program you will see tagged #ALLCAPS #nocap around the Interwebs. Because we mean it, we are shouting #RESPECT to everyone involved in making this happen – in ALL CAPS, no cap, from the tippy-top of the ‘Snocap’ (as in ‘snow-cap’ on top of the mountain, as you will see in the logo after the jump).

Engaging interviews and mind-blowing performances from my bredren BoneBreaker Jones (with Sam Peezy aka Tony Factory), J-Sun KOA (King Of Alabama), GreaseKydz (Expo, Phobro da Ab, Shawty Plx, Tea Bag da Herbalist) and Sikz #RESPECT #ALLCAPS #nocap

And the family of support I had was HUGE: Gerald Olivari, DJ Yogi, Tierra, BigDee, and Brittany of @ATLRemix …videography by Si-Video Production’s own Robert Nunnally and on-camera Host/Spokesmodel Liza Ashe of @GoodCurvy …my invited ‘press corps’ (@ArtByOdell and Ismael AbduSalaam) …and my consultant & stalwart ally Iman Lexington who answered all my what-do-you-think calls and emails leading up to the event. Even my nephew Jasen (J-Sun’s son) came through and stayed with his old uncle to make sure I was ‘safe’ while out that late at night. Plus, after a long work week, seeing all the familiar and new friendly faces in the place gave me LIFE #RESPECT #ALLCAPS #nocap

The whole night was EPIC! And, man, oh, MAN! Just wait until we get our audio and video finalized. Keep keeping your ears and eyes open for that. And keep checking back here for the exclusives!

(In the meantime, I tossed in a few behind-the-scenes screenshots after the jump.)

Altered Crates x DJ Tiger – “The Premier Hussle” (DJ Premier x Nipsey Hussle Mashup) [Mixtape]

This is beautiful. The track blending by DJ Tiger; even the artwork by AiryVision. What an incredible tribute!

Dedicated to the life and memory of the late, great #NipseyHussle, Altered Crates & DJ Tiger present “The Premier Hussle.”

DJ Tiger expertly blends Nipsey’s vocals and lyrics over rare and lesser-known production from the legendary DJ Premier to create a unique listening experience. Known for rapping over west-coast inspired production and more modern and trap-style beats, “The Premier Hussle” finds Nipsey riding over classic Boom-Bap east-coast vibes.

Lyric Jones x Nameless – “Ga$ Money” (Album)

Ah yes. A treasure. And the music is dope, too. I’m just talking about everyone’s fave lovely lyricist Lyric Jones’ collabo project with producer Nameless. They dropped this “Ga$ Money” last month.

Emcee, Singer-Songwriter & Drummer, Lyric Jones teams up with Producer Nameless to bring the world a solid well-rounded project titled, “GA$ MONEY.”

The duo found common ground as they both were creating this project long distance while she drove Lyft & Uber majority of the time as he was a truck driver.

The title came about while joking about “Gas Money” being the bare minimum required for their presence or services in the music business – often times people wanting their gifts for free, this tieing in how they both drive all day to make ends meet.

Cleaning out my inbox, I forgot about this scoop-n-score sent to me by my folks over at Bad Magics. Sharing is caring, people, especially when we are talking about Ras Kass music. And since it was dead in the middle of winter at the time, the heat was appreciated. Check out Ras Dolo with “Featuring Myself” above.
