Executive Producer Thandie Newton Presents “Liyana” (Trailer)
You know the movie is going to be powerful when the trailer touches your heart and wells your eyes with tears. With animation in it no less. Incredibly compelling film!
Under the guidance of acclaimed South African storyteller, Gcina Mhlophe, five orphaned children from Swaziland collaborate to craft a collective fairytale drawn from their darkest memories and brightest dreams. Their fictional character, Liyana, is brought to life in innovative animated artwork as she embarks on a perilous quest to rescue her young twin brothers. The children’s real and imagined worlds begin to converge, and they must choose what kind of story they will tell – in fiction and in their own lives.
This genre-defying film weaves an original animated hero’s journey with poetic documentary scenes to create an inspiring tale of perseverance. LIYANA is a tribute to creativity, the strength of the human spirit, and the healing power storytelling.
Critically acclaimed, and executive produced by award-winning actress, Thandie Newton, LIYANA has won more than 25 jury and audience awards and screened at more than 80 film festivals around the world including the British Film Institute’s London Film Festival and MoMA’s Doc Fortnight.
Filmmaker And Tech Enthusiast Pete Majarich Gives Us A Look At The ‘Surface Of Mars’… From Utah (Short Film)
Uh ohhh. Elon Musk, we have a problem.
There are still moon-landing deniers around who claim that all that video of that American space trip was faked. And this short film “The Visitor” (by Australian filmmaker Pete Majarich) is an even more appealing, amazing, look at a trip to what looks to be a ‘red’ planet.
This was shot in a southern Utah desert. Confirmed (hit the jump and see). So, if we make the Mars trip… proving it… could be a problem!
(But this is a cool tech-driven flick though. No problem with that.)
South African Western ‘Five Fingers For Marseilles’ Is In American Theaters Now (Trailer)
DOPE!
Marseilles was never free, but it will be. Change is coming. #AfricaRising
“Five Fingers For Marseilles” is being billed as a ‘rousing, heroic, original South African Western’ (the existence of such a genre is EPIC enough already). The trailer more than teases a bold & fully engaging story arc, azz-kickery and grit, with just enough modernness (i.e. bicycles instead of horses, guns but not automatics for the shootouts). Watch the trailer and judge for self if you agree it’s worth the upgrade to large popcorn with extra butter!
The Final Teaser For The “Predator” Reboot Is Shorter And Packed With More Crazy Action (Trailer)
Why should we give the “Predator” reboot a chance at the box office? Because,
They’re large.
They’re fast.
And f**king you up is their idea of tourism!
Movie line of the year!! Dialogue like that, plus whatever has Keegan-Michael Key hollering, “YEAH!” like that. Gotta risk the price of the ticket to see.
From the outer reaches of space to the backwoods of southern Georgia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black’s explosive reinvention of the Predator series. Now, the universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before. And only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and an evolutionary biology professor can prevent the end of the human race.

Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) ain’t NEVER scared! Quite the opposite. In this trailer, she said she PRAYED for Michael Myers to get out… so she could KILL HIM!
Evil is real. #HalloweenMovie
Yeah. Looks like a REAL horror movie will finally hit the big screen! Watch the latest trailer and pop that corn extra fluffy.
Netflix Presents Ashtan Towles’ Experiences Tackling Race-Related Issues At Yale University (Documentary)
Grew up in the South, all her youth, and she made it through… admitted to an Ivy League university, no less. And STILL this sista cannot ‘get away’ from racism in America.
Imagine waking up to find your school trending because of a racist incident?
– Strong Black Lead
Yeah. Don’t EVER speak of America being post-racial. Even in the ‘affluent’ North. Yale was trending on racism.

See How Replica Sneakers Made In China Make It Into The Hands Of U.S. Buyers (HBO)
Wow! The fiends NEED the latest Yeezys and Jordans like this bad? The fake kick market is kicking this hard. Gotta be if there is a black market with movers in it like Chan, right? Let VICE News tell it…
After the sun sets in Putian, thousands of bikes carrying fake sneakers hit the streets.
The lace-up black market is no secret in Putian, and it’s where you can find Chan, a vendor with a knack for getting high-quality pairs off the streets and into the hands of hypebeasts on the other side of the globe.

Soaring Sex Toy Sales In South Korea (Documentary)
Hmm. Surprising that this is just starting to blow up as an industry over there. Sex and all things naughty-naughty sell and sell well. The level of regulation and societal taboo to counter it must have been tremendously stifling. Still likely is, but looks like things are loosening up (insert your own ‘dirty jokes’ here).
Sex toy stores are opening up all over South Korea and customers have been flocking to them. In the past, the few adult stores that existed were hidden behind tinted glass and filled with dirty or outdated toys. Now times are changing and sex is becoming more visible to the mainstream.
But more access to sex toys doesn’t negate South Korea’s many sexual taboos and the lack of sex education and industry regulation.

Move Over ‘Driving Miss Daisy’… This ‘Driving Dr. Shirley’ Movie Is Going To Move Movie-Goers This November (Trailer)
(That “It takes courage to change hearts” line in this trailer… wow!)
The man Mahershala Ali stays working, doesn’t he? Got the ‘Battle Angel’ movie coming at year’s end, plus this incredible road trip story with co-star Viggo Mortensen… “Green Book.”
When Tony Lip (Mortensen), a bouncer from an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx, is hired to drive Dr. Don Shirley (Ali), a world-class Black pianist, on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South, they must rely on “The Green Book†to guide them to the few establishments that were then safe for African-Americans. Two Wrestlers Speak On ‘Life After Sumo’ (Documentary)
The glamor and prestige of being on top of the sumo game in the Land Of The Rising Sun… if you can get to the top. And even if you do, being ‘about that life’ comes at a price. Watch VICE SPORTS tally up the bill in this documentary episode.
Sumo wrestlers enter training stables, or beyas, as young teens and dedicate their lives to the sport until they retire. Training involves incredible food intake, heavy beer consumption as a means of weight gain and daily full-contact sparring. Along with the health impacts, most wrestlers leave the sport with little education and less money. In this VICE Sports exclusive, we visit with two retired rikishis to get their take on life after sumo.

Taraji P. Henson Stars In “What Men Want” (Trailer)
Taraji P. Henson is “What Men Want.” Point. Blank. Period. Usually not sure about remakes of films. There’s always a chance of the flick being no more than a substandard copy, but with Taraji, the funny supporting cast, and the cameos (look for the ‘poker table’ clip above for a gang of ’em) this trailer is teasing a remake with a good chance of doing it right.
For The NYC Title, Brooklyn Tech’s Team Will Step In The Arena (Documentary)
If you cannot wrap your head around ‘step team’ as a sports/athletic activity, look at this and reconsider. Just saying. They go in as hard as any team on the court (or anywhere else).
You won’t find the most successful team at Brooklyn Technical High School on the basketball court or on the football field. You’ll find them stepping in the cafeteria – sweating, laughing and striving to keep their crown as NYC’s regional champions. In this VICE Sports exclusive, we met up with the all-female Lady Dragons step team to see their pressure-packed final days of preparation for NYC regionals.

Changing The Game: Lacrosse Comes To Harlem (Video)
Up top, it’s all about the blacktop. The lyric, “Basketball is my favorite sport,” not lacrosse… right? Well, these kids are into it AND it’s helping them level up to a better shot in life.
Basketball courts may still dominate north of 125th Street in New York City, but more kids than ever are taking up lacrosse as their sport of choice. We followed Javon to hear what his friends think about lacrosse and how he plans to make his mark on the game.

Watch. Might have to change that lyric.
Lifestyle: You’re In Los Angeles. You’re High. What Do You Do Next? (Video)
A weed travel show. Excellent idea! And an appropriately laid-back episode to boot.
On VICE’s weed travel show ‘BLUNT REVIEWS,’ we trek to places where weed is legal to review things a cannabis-consuming tourist can do while they’re stoned. On this episode, VICE’s Darlene Demorizi spent a day getting blazed in Los Angeles, where she cured her munchies at Pink’s Hot Dogs, a historic restaurant that tops franks with guacamole and nacho cheese. Then she unwound at Lit Yoga, a THC-friendly studio, and stopped by Puff Pass & Paint to make a little art over a glass of CBD-infused wine.

SlamBall, Born In The USA, Has Been Reborn In China (Documentary)
Just to review, or introduce… SlamBall is a bouncy-bouncy version of basketball played on floors with embedded trampolines to facilitate super-high leaps and bounds. As described in the above doc vid, the game is pretty ‘video gamish’ and due to business and sports culture trending downfalls, SlamBall got ‘slammed’ in the U.S. However, it has found life in China.
“We never left, we just needed to take the best path for us,†says SlamBall’s creator Mason Gordon. After years with little exposure other than showcases and bar conversations between nostalgic fans, Slamball is now experiencing a resurgence in China. With a focus on bringing programs to universities before securing any TV rights, the sport is finding a foothold in a basketball-obsessed nation. VICE Sports traveled to China to check out the nation’s first facility and take in the scene.
