Ne-Yo Does Benefit Concert In Nagoya, Japan (Video)

Ne-Yo did a benefit concert for Japan yesterday & is one of the first R&B artists to get things in motion over there. On my radio show last week I interviewed Nate of Boyz II Men who mentioned that they too had a benefit in the works for the Japanese people affected by the recent disasters out there. Japan is arguably a huge supporter of R&B music abroad so it’s great to see artists already working to give back. Big ups to Ne-Yo for this & also for a doing a decent job in the new movie Battle: LA I saw at the theater too…..

‘J Is For Junkie’: Another Sordid View Of Crack In America by Nikki Liverpool (Film Review)

‘J is for Junkie’: another sordid view of crack in America

Documentaries on crack addiction often play like Film School 101 and that is exactly how J is for Junkie approaches the subject. Corey Davis, the newbie filmmaker who managed to get blurbs from both media mogul Damon Dash and hip hop artist, Lupe Fiasco, filmed footage over three days in October in Atlanta at a crack enclave familiarly known as “The Living Room”. Over the opening credits, Davis lets us into a little background about himself: his own father was a junkie, too.

We’re introduced to Judy, 52, who sounds like and looks like a man, whose presence is weaved throughout the whole documentary. She’s been on crack for over 30 years and who wants to get off the stuff to rejoin her family and society, but, as is typical for most junkies, can’t seem to find it within herself to do so. Other characters come through to tell their story and their various reasons, some would say excuses, for having tried crack in the first place. Either a woman turned them out or their mother died “killed by Grady (Hospital)”. For some reason Davis chooses to film John, a homeless man, just out of prison for attempted murder, looking for work. His story is tragic, but he’s not a junkie, so it’s unclear why he’s featured at all.

Following the Film School 101 checklist, Judy shows us how to get crack paraphernalia, how to prep it and how to smoke it. It’s not particularly gritty, but tries to be. Hardy in the league of HBO’s The Corner or even Alex Cox’s Sid and Nancy. The soundtrack is great, but tends to sometimes drown out the dialogue, which too could have benefited from subtitles more often than used. This would certainly play better to audiences outside of Georgia.

I’d say overall the film is OK for a first feature, but just. It’s an impressive start to get a screening for someone so new to the industry, but I’d like see it more personalized. At the Q and A, the budding filmmaker makes no claim that the documentary was personal. I would have to agree, but I think that’s a mistake or perhaps he didn’t want to have to face that just as the film came up with no answers or solutions, either for those who inhabit the “Living Room” or even the auteur’s own father.

Guest Column: ‘Face It. Hip Hop Is Grown’ by Kool Kila

Face It. Hip-Hop Is Grown.

Face it. Hip-hop is grown. Hip-hop has BEEN grown. And rap music is a full-fledged genre now. You can see hip-hop’s influence everywhere, fashion, movies, food, toys, etc. with both young artists and veterans alike. Grandparents can recite Run DMC, T.I., Public Enemy and Snoop Dogg. A few select radio stations across the country now play classic rap songs lightly in their rotation. XM/Sirius satellite radio has a channel dedicated to “old school.” And artists like Doug E. Fresh, Slick Rick, Whodini, Sugarhill Gang constantly tour. As a matter of fact, Public Enemy tours abroad in Africa and Europe more than they do in the US.

The Singularity Of Ray Kurzweil: He’s Seen The Future & The Machines In Us (Video)

Tomorrow Apple will be releasing its iPad 2 & many ways I’m still in awe at just how fast technology is changing in just the course of a year. I found this video very interesting about just how far technology will take us in the future. Ray Kurzweil is an inventor & futurist who has predicted many events before they occurred & in one of his new books he talks about ‘Singularity‘. He coined the term ‘Singularity’ for which he believes by the year 2050 man & machines will be one in the same. I found this video to be pretty fascinating because with the speed in which technology is advancing I’d guess this road to ‘Singularity’ could possibly happen a decade or so sooner.

Waka Flocka Flame Poses Nude For PETA (Photo)

When I heard in the news that Waka Flocka Flame was posing nude for PETA I thought it was a joke. Turns out it wasn’t…SMDH. I can’t get too mad at Waka Flocka because he’s still young. I’d like to see people advocate saving the lives of young black men dying in these streets before saving the animals. Just my opinion. Photo under the hood….

The BLITZ – 2/28/11: The Academy Awards Edition

And the award for the best news segment for a Men’s based hip hop & music blog goes to…… The BLITZ! ****Applause*** .  Well we can’t exactly lie & say we watched the Academy Awards.  Unlike Sidney Poitier’s historic win back in 1964, there weren’t any significant African American performers nominated for anything so our focus was on the NY Knicks & Miami Heat battling it out down in sun soaked Miami.  I agree with Idris Elba that the Oscars aren’t designed for African Americans. Just focus on making good films. Yes more info on all of that under the hood.  It’s the BLITZ! Chock full of News & Information from around globe in a quick reference guide to start your Monday.
