A Song For Net Neutrality: Don’t Flush Our Rights Down the Toilet (Video)

How can you not stop by the Net Neutrality website (linked here) for more info after watching this video. The song is performed by Bobby Jo Valentine. The message to the FCC (and corporate interests): Don’t flush our rights down the toilet! The Internet was meant to be FREE.

So…is anybody gonna comment on the fully clothed corporate cronies stripping the people butt booty naked… catching us all with our pants down? Anyone? So much good fodder for discussion.

Big Men (Documentary)

Now, this is long enough a film to be called an epic saga… but it’s real life. And it keeps happening to us. “Big Men” takes us into the high-powered world of African oil deals – money, power, but the respect… that’s limited. The lens the filmmakers use – the telling of a couple of stories about countries at different levels in the oil game at the time: Ghana and Nigeria. The main story is an insider’s inside view of Dallas-based oil company Kosmos Energy and its partners developing the first commercial oil field in Ghana’s history (between 2007 and 2011). In parallel, the documentary covers an angle of the oil story in Nigeria’s Niger Delta: a militant gang trying to profit off oil in many and any ways…holding that they must do it because the prosperity promised the region’s people hasn’t come after all these years. Very telling of Ghana’s future in the industry.

It’s a shame. Same damn story. Outsiders find a rare resource in Africa. They seek to exploit it for profit. They know the venture will be dangerous and risky to the native people and to themselves. But that’s okay in capitalist pursuits; shared risk, shared rewards, right? But then the money comes, and there is just never enough to do the right thing, is there? And you know, even that might be okay, if everyone wins and loses sometime… but that is NEVER the case. Corrupt government and politicians ALWAYS win; partnering with the oil companies who always win. The people who scrape by, legally or illegally, win small if ever. And the every day person ALWAYS loses. And it’s always Africa. And it is always apparent right from the start.

Watch.

In the Ghana story. Man. They were burning $2 Billion of oil … a day … and they are just ‘testing’ the field? Wowwww… Extracting oil from Ghana was not only being done in a less-than-equitable way; it was WASTEFUL and was putting toxins in the air to no one’s benefit. Well, at least to start; as Kosmos Energy and its stakeholders looked to make many more billions once pumping begins in earnest. Guaranteed it doesn’t get better for the people from that point.

Kickstarter: Massive Ammo For Your Next Water Balloon Fight (Video)

Maaann! This should be out NOW! Heads would getting splatted!! Haaaa. Water balloon fights were the best back in the day, but chances are you could only have one, two… maybe three on deck for the battle. Not a lot of ammo for a ‘sustained battle.’ And how many balloons popped or split at the lip when filling or stretching them over the faucet/spigot to start? Well, no more.

Fill and tie hundreds of water balloons in minutes with our attachment that comes ready-to-go, no preparation necessary!

Yeah. Tinnus Enterprises’ Kickstarter page promises that Bunch O Balloons will fill and tie 100 water balloons in less than 1 minute. Oh, and for those who don’t care or don’t care for fun in general (haters). It doesn’t matter. Because the Kickstarter campaign is over 6900% funded. In fact, Tinnus is taking pre-orders right now for this party product (anticipated to market Spring-Summer 2015)!

Kudos to inventor Josh Malone (and his testers kids).

Technology: Boeing Is Trying To S.A.V.E. Energy On Formation Flights Like The Birds Do (Video)

Birds flying in formation is a wonder to watch; but the birds don’t do it for you. They save energy flying that way. Boeing’s engineers know that. By getting their ducks in order (e.g. flying in a particular formation) – employing advances in flight software and technique (by Surfing Aircraft Vortices for Energy, or S.A.V.E.) – they channel flying flocks’ methodology. So doing, Boeing has been able to prove it can save 5% to 10% on the fuel it burns on flights. Over 10 flights, it’d seem you’ve pretty much saved enough for an 11th. Nothing to sneeze at…even if you are allergic to feathers. Interesting clip. Watch.

Yes! This “What Would You Do?” episode is not as much a test of racial profiling store owners and staff…we know they are out there. This is a test of bystanders’ willingness to call them on their bullsh!t.

After The ‘Beats’ Deal Is Done, Jimmy Iovine Will Be A Likely Billionaire. Dr. Dre Will Be… Close (Video)

Oh… close! Closer than me (waaaay closer). In the Businessweek clip above, they cover the numbers behind the deal. Whether the parties settle with a cash deal, or by stock (which allows them to avoid heavy taxation), Interscope’s Jimmy Iovine (who had a bigger share of the company and more personal assets to start) should clear a billion. Dr. Dre stands to scoop $600 million out of the pie.

That’s a damn big scoop. Just not a billion. But it’s okay. Staying in the same circles, Dre could very well be playing in the Billionaire Boys Club one day. Salute to the Diggy Diggy Doc!

Technology: Building 10 Houses In One Day With A Giant 3D Printer (Video)

This could upend the housing industry on the whole… including the housing finance industry. Imagine the possibilities for affordable homes if single-story, one-room houses can be built for less than $5,000…in less than a day’s time! If only we had this pre-2008. Cheap housing. Little or no financing needed. Maybe no market meltdown, because there’d be waaay fewer crazy mortgages floated by irresponsible bankers (or buyers/sellers)… wow! Okay, okay. The 3D-printer tech used to accomplish this is incredibly cool, too.

Using a 6.6-meter-tall, 32-meter-long industrial printer a Chinese company is using 3D-printing technology to build cheap housing for modernizing housing conditions in Chinese villages.

Of course, this will still mean another manufacturing industry score for China over the U.S. (e.g. still leaving America a country of consumers instead of producers); but let’s table that rant for now. This is awesome tech!

Tech Training And A Real Chance Outside: San Quentin Inmates Find Hope In ‘The Last Mile’ (Video)

Incredible story. More than “feel good” this is “DO good”… by helping inmates at San Quentin prison in the last stretch of their sentences, The Last Mile program gives them what one out of every two ex-cons don’t currently get when they get out: a chance! The program teaches tech skills and allows the to develop and demo (e.g. present, on stage, to an audience) business proposals for investors. Now… there is NO promise of success for these prisoners-turned-pitchmen; but is anything in life ever “promised?”

Guaranteed though, no one in the clips above or below (after the jump) are down about their chances in life. A little nervous; sure, probably outright scared. But this is exciting, worthwhile stuff. Please watch and share!

Permanently Temporary: The Truth About Temp Labor (Documentary)

President Obama is on board with BIG retailers like Amazon, driving economic renewal AND employing more and more people with American jobs that cannot be outsourced.

Yay… right? No.

Temp labor is one of the fastest growing industries in the US. Increasingly, temp workers are part of a business strategy to keep costs down and profits high.

From mega-retailers to mom-and-pop shops, temps are hired to do some of the hardest and most dangerous jobs. While more and more of the American workforce is composed of temporary workers, they’re largely hidden from public view. Many of these workers stay silent, often having their livelihoods threatened if they speak out.

But that’s what VICE is best at doing: shedding light on shameful practices and telling the stories of people for whom it would be too dangerous to tell themselves. Damn shame that the largest corporations, time and again, ride the road to success on the backs of laborers with no regard to their interests or even their well-being… at all. Watch the documentary above. Learn.

VICE: Jamaican Herb Business (Video)

Hold the phone. Marjuana is still illegal in Jamaica.

That may well change though, as Western powers pressured the island nation to tamp down production and export of its cultural crop are now reconsidering their stances on ganja en masse. At the forefront of stirring change for the country: Jamaica’s first medicinal marijuana company, Medicanja, launched this year against a backdrop of reinvigorated debate around ganja law reform among leading policymakers. Renowned Jamaican scientist Dr. Henry Lowe, a leader in THC studies for medical purposes, is running the company, with the University of West Indies and the University of Technology jointly funding the facility. Dr. Lowe says the company will be studying the scientific benefits of marijuana and producing CBD-based medical products, which fall under legally accepted medicinal use of the ganja plant. Lowe says the plant extract can be used to treat psychosis and severe pain, as well as mid-life crises in men.

On house arrest in the Dotcom Mansion, big-crazy-rich-guy-who-does-crazy-things Kim Dotcom (founder of Megaupload) is still, a year later, in the wake of the storm unleashed by enforcement agencies of the United States and Australia; waiting on possible extradition and trial. So, the pioneer/businessman is not lying down.

Kim Dotcom

Not lying down; but in the meantime, laying down some music at the mansion (in Auckland, New Zealand). Nice.
