R&B/Soul: Frank Ocean – “White”

This is the full version of “White”, the only solo Frank Ocean track from the upcoming Odd Future Tape Vol. 2. The song is only two minutes long but its still pretty soulful & quality work. I could honestly care less about an Odd Future album but I’m definitely anticipating the next album from Frank Ocean on the solo. Listen below to this joint & check out the lyrics to the song under the hood….

SXSW: Santigold- “Disparate Youth” Fader Fort Performance (Video)

Aleon Craft – “My Girlfriend” feat. Grip Plyaz & Tuki Carter (Video)

Check out this new video “My Girlfriend” directed by “Chilly-O” from Decatur representer Aleon Craft. The track produced by SMKA also features Grip Plyaz & Tuki Carter & floats within that consistent vibe of new age hip hop funk that Aleon Craft is becoming noted for. Aleon Craft has one of the better stage shows in Atlanta & the video itself manages to capture some of that as if they straight hopped off the “Mothership Decatur” mothafunkaz….The song appears on SMKA’s “The 808 Experiment Vol. 3” project….

Focus… – “The Life”

Grammy award winning producer, songwriter, & emcee “Focus…” let’s loose this new joint called “The Life” for the fans to give fans a new look. This is one of the joints that he let cats hear on our radio show a few weeks back. In case you missed it check out the joint he released with Sole’ in a previous post called “A New Look” as well…..

Wiz Khalifa – “Morocco”

Never got around to posting this song from Wiz Khalifa called “Morocco” when it initially leaked a little over a week ago. I believe it will appear on his upcoming Taylor Allderdice mixtape. Coincidentally I’m set to go to Morocco for the first time ever this year on an educational trip & this song will definitely be added to my itunes “Morocco” playlist that I’ll be bumping through my headphones for the flight. This is definitely not a hardcore lyrical rap record from Wiz, but it just sounds good to me overall & that’s all that matters.

Santigold – “Disparate Youth” (Video)

The Brooklyn by way of Philly artist Santigold is back with a dope new video she directed herself for “Disparate Youth” off of her new album “Maser Of My Make-Believe” that’s due out May 1st. It’s the second video release from the upcoming album since “Big Mouth” joint that appeared to be a diss to Lady Gaga & the overall state of the music industry today where hype is being applauded over quality. Check out the interesting looking album cover under the hood….

Lupe Fiasco & Bilal Join The ‘Robert Glasper Experiment’ on The David Letterman Show (Video)

While promoting his dope new album “Black Radio”, Robert Glasper brought along Philly soul singer Bilal & Chicago emcee Lupe Fiasco with him on the David Letterman show to perform “Always Shine”.

Classic Clips: Happy Bornday Nina Simone! (February 21,1933)

This is one of my many favorites from the one of the greatest jazz musician/songwriters, who was the embodiment of “Black is Beautiful”, Nina Simone (February 21,1933-April 21,2003). Although she wasnt traditional jazz, nor did she have the tradional smooth jazz/lounge voice like Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington,or Ella Fitzgerald but check the linear notes of any of your favorite hip hop albums and you will see her joints credited for samples everywhere. Heads knew muscially Nina Simone would “Put a Spell on You”.

Yuna – “Live Your Life” (Video)

Malaysian artist Yuna dropped this new single produced by Pharrell called “Live Your Life” back in January & since then I’ve had it on repeat quite a few times in one of my itunes playlists. It’s such a really dope song that you subconsciously find yourself hitting repeat on it. Now Yuna is going to have us hitting repeat with this cool new video for “Live Your Life” that will appear on her upcoming album due this April on the new FADER label. Make sure yall check for it….

Colin Munroe – “The Fight Of My Life” featuring Pusha T

It’s been a minute since Colin Munroe dropped something where he wasn’t just the featured artist on someone else’s song. I can definitely say I’m a fan of his music & would like to see him eventually get more just deserved fruits of his talent in a greater capacity. Ironically with a song called “The Fight Of My Life” maybe the Canadian singer, songwriter, & all around musician is beginning to turn the tables with Pusha T as the featured on his new joint. Check out a mini very brief behind the scenes video of the the two recording this joint at Capitol studios in Los Angeles after the jump….

Mansions On The Moon – “Lightyears” EP

One of my favorite bands I enjoy to listen to that seamlessly manages to incorporate a variety of sounds that makes you feel as if you’re traveling to distant worlds, without question, is ‘Mansions On The Moon’. The former Atlanta based trio just dropped their latest “Lightyears” EP & this time around it’s executive produced by Pharrell. The project is not a free project as it is up for sale on itunes but you can listen to tracks off the album below…

Little Dragon – “Crystalfilm” (Video)

Little Dragon returns with the eccentric visuals for their track “Crystalfilm”, from their 2011 release Ritual Union. Directed by Daniel Wirtberg, the video conjures up an intense, visually provocative dream sequence. Little Dragon is good for keeping ish fresh and strangely innovative.

The 54th Annual Grammy Awards Live Performances (Video)

I was too busy drinking & stuffing my face with popcorn while watching the Miami Heat annihilate the Atlanta Hawks to watch the Grammys. I tuned in rather late, but Mr. World Premier himself Yardie always come through with the performance videos from Chris Brown, Alicia Keys, Coldplay, Rihanna, & more so I knew I could count on them being there for me when I got home late. More videos under the hood….

WISH and High Museum of Art Presents KAWS: “Down Time”

KAWS OPENING

KAWS SPEAKS

Long time no see. So I’ve come across something incredibly interesting that is planning to happen February 18th in the ATL. Artist Brian Donnelly, also known as KAWS, will be joining his “Companion” at the High Museum of Art here in Atlanta, GA. For those that are not hip to former New Jersey/ New York Graffiti writer KAWS, he is a prolific pop artist that has done work for Kid Cudi, Pharrell Williams, Bape, Hennesy, Dos Equis, and most notably Kanye West‘s fourth studio album “808 and Heartbreak”.  Kaws who worked as a background designer for Disney often uses bottom half of Mickey Mouse for his “Orginal Fake” collectibles and of course the four finger gloves on most of his printed and painted work as well. There will be a “Culture Shock” social after the already SOLD OUT lecture The High Museum will be conducting February 16th 2012. You can purchase tickets online for the event HERE. Be sure to visit the exhibit but most importantly support your local artists!

Yours Truly,

FRANK YERBY

Red Bull Music Academy Contest (Video)

It’s about that time again for musicians to submit their applications to attend the Red Bull Music Academy that will be held in NYC this year from September 30 – November 2, 2012.  The Red Bull Music Academy is an international workshop that was founded in 1998, and touches down in a different city each year.  Last year the workshops were held in Madrid Spain & artists like Erykah Badu, Young Guru, MF Doom, Bootsy Collins, Chic & more either performed or lectured during the symposium.  How it works is two groups of 30 successful applicants, themselves representing a diverse range of music styles and methodologies, attend lectures by musical pioneers, and work on their own tunes in custom-built studios. By night, they have the chance to perform in some of the host city’s most iconic clubs and concert halls.  Atlanta has been fortunate in that a few participants have come from this city in DJ Rasta Root & most recently producer Slide 20 XL who attended Georgia State University here in Atlanta.  There’s no age limit, but you must be 21 to enter & it’s totally free to apply so if you or anybody you know of is an aspiring artist, DJ, Producers, emcees or all around musician that would be interested just tell them to go to the link below & download the application. Application deadline is April 2nd so y’all better not procrastinate with this opportunity….

R&B/Alternative: Delilah – “2-4am” (Mixtape)

UK singer Delilah is one of those types of artists who have been releasing some great music that compels me to keep an eye out for what she does next.  She has a new full length project on Atlantic Records called “From The Ground Up” due to drop on March 26th (4 days before my birthday…should be a nice gift to me).  To hold her growing fanbase over, the Paris born UK raised artist dropped this new 8-track mixtape/EP of sorts called “2-4am” that I’ve been playing this morning.  A few of the key tracks I really like I’ve included below, but you can check out the tracklisting & download the whole project by clicking on the artwork & links underneath….

“LOVE DRUG”

“21”

“WISH I HAD YOUR LIFE”
