Cover Story: Watch The Cyntoia Brown Documentary And Learn About How Her Story Has Gone Viral (Video)

Have you heard, or been following, the #FreeCyntoiaBrown movement? Cyntoia Brown has already been in prison for well over a decade, convicted of murder as a teen. The story has recently resurfaced and gone viral. Gotten the attention of celebs like Rihanna, and Kim Kardashian (see what she tweeted after the jump) has said she has reached out to her lawyers to see what she could do to help.

Embedded above is a documentary on Cyntoia. Watch. Watch NOW. They are snatching copies of the documentary offline with the quickness (took digging to find this one). At least the PBS Independent Lens trailer (after the jump) should remain stable, since it has been since 2011. Matter of fact, eff that: going in after the jump and posting all the clips PBS left up. Maybe PBS will re-release the documentary itself in full. This story should be known, told and retold. Tragedy begets more tragedy. You (me, we). Must. LEARN!

Also, you can also become better versed in the various details of the case and campaign to get Cyntoia Brown freed via the links below.

(More backstory and catch-up content after the jump, including clips from Roland S. Martin on TV One and Big Tigger on Atlanta’s V-103 radio.)

Hmmm… made folks ‘happy’ AND made some money AAAAND made a donation to a good cause. Can’t beat that. I mean, you can. That’s your biz.

African Men Being Sold Into Slavery In 2017 (Video)

Big strong boys for farm work… 400… 700…
You are watching an auction of human beings.

Holy sh!t. That ache in your gut is probably not as profound as it would have been a century ago, or if you were actually being auctioned, but it SHOULD NOT BE THERE AT ALL! Just like this slave trade going on today. It should not be going on, in Libya, or ANYWHERE!

Smugglers in Libya are auctioning migrants off as slaves. At a property outside Tripoli, CNN’s Nima Elbagir witnessed a dozen men go under the hammer in the space of minutes.

Why White People Should NOT Use The N-Word, Even If Black People ‘Use It All The Time’ (Video)

Ta-Nehisi Coates with no malice or attempt at ‘points scored’… but this is a plain and simple explanation of why the n-word is “NOT” when it comes to White people speaking the word.

Context is key.

Colin Kaepernick: GQ Magazine’s “Citizen Of The Year.” Here’s Why (Video)

I saw an attempt to reframe the whole ‘Kaep blackballed for #TakeAKnee‘ argument. Going so far as belittling his moves & societal standing. You might have seen it on Facebook or something: in essence saying current NFL standout JJ Watt raised millions for hurricane relief while Colin Kaepernick just gave a million or so.

Hey. JJ Watt did a great thing; inspiring others to join his cause. Colin is TRYING to do a great necessary thing; trying to compel law enforcement, lawmakers, and the uninformed majority to actually ACT like #BlackLivesMatter too. Yeah, less popular. Less money in it. But even though Colin’s number is “smaller,” the dollars are doing big things!

Watch. See why Kaep DESERVES to be “Citizen Of The Year!”

Mysonne Speaks On It: Meek Mill’s Going Back To Jail Is ‘Bigger Than Meek’ (Video)

Okay, everybody believes in justice. But, when it comes to fitting the punishment to the crime, how far is too far? Interesting and compelling discussion here. Mysonne & Carmen Perez speak on the pending Meek Mill jail bid as an example and jumpoff point for extended discussion on a trend of unusual punishment, the scales of justice being unfairly tipped and more.

Eye Candy: Demetria Obilor Is The Sexiest Traffic Reporter Ever! (Video)

I have been known to tell an insanely sexy woman (or three or more) that their beauty will inspire hate! Case in point: Demetria Obilor had to clapback on the semi-humble to check a hater that came for her online over her on-air style of dress when she reports on traffic.

Will y’all please let the sexy be great without the hate? Especially Demetria… mm mm mm! Mercy!!!

Activism/History: Theresa Burroughs Would Not Be Denied The Right To Vote (Video)

Being from Alabama, growing up in Tuskegee (and in the shadow of Montgomery and Selma), with Civil Rights figures (Dr. Bernard LaFayette, Attorney Fred Gray, Rosa Parks, Dr. Charles Gomillion) as neighbors, this story hits home… hard! Not even going to hit y’all with a ‘VOTE DAMMIT’ rant today. Just watch, and maybe stop taking our ‘privileges’ for granted. Folks had to FIGHT for our rights; and even then, others tried to keep us from exercising them.

When Theresa Burroughs came of voting age in Alabama during the Jim Crow era, she was determined to cast her ballot — but she had a long fight ahead of her.

Ice Cube On CNBC Right After Releasing His “Death Certificate” Album (Video)

Ah, so Jerry Heller did make some anti-defamation moves (reaching out to Simon Wiesenthal, Wiesenthal Center) like the character in “Straight Outta Compton” threatened.

Late night call-in talk show, taped right after Ice Cube left NWA and released his solo album called “Death Certificate.”
– X+

Looking at the comments on this vid on the Tube and across the Interwebs, this interview might have been part of the setup… to negatively spin Cube’s views & lyrics. Gotta say, Cube, even as a young man, repped himself and the Culture strong on air; despite the media pressure.

(Reporter/host was kind of thin-skinned near the end, right? Asking. And slipping in that “Man Of Rage” moniker… Really? He never once even raised his voice.)

History: Stand For The Anthem, But Have You Really Listened To It? Does It Stand For ALL Of Us? (Video)

Respect shout to Morgan State alum Duane Saunders Jr. who is putting us on to the National Anthem’s [conveniently] forgotten third verse (quoted in the next block) with this documentary “What So Proudly We Hail.” Might make you feel a new different way about #TakeAKnee

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion,
A home and a country, should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave,
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave

The breakdown: Hireling and slave. That slave part… that’s Black people enslaved in the U.S. Many made a deal with the Brits, to join their side, gaining freedom if the Redcoats won… and the ‘real Americans’ (not us “three-fifths” humans, just living in America) got salty and wrong a song about it. Wanna hear it? It’s in the 3rd verse of the National Anthem. And that Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution part… Yeah, our ancestors “betrayal” (imagine their gall, making a deal with their SLAVEMASTERS’ enemy) was a pollution that their spill blood had washed away. As in the song celebrated our ancestors’ deaths in battle (as opposed to beating, raping, and working us to death under the power of the lash and legislation). See, we (Black people) could not be saved from the terror of flight. The Americans’ valor, the flag waving in evidence of it, o’er the land of the FREE (not us) and the home of the BRAVE (nah, they thought us traiterous cowards)!

FOH!!

Real ‘Muricans are quick to tell us to love it or leave it… today. Why not let us ‘leave it’ back in the day when you enslaved us? We had to enlist and take up arms and FIGHT you, and this would not be the last time, to be FREE to LEAVE. And miss us with the “Why can’t we just drop it and move on?” argument. Drop it?!? Hell, like that 3rd Anthem verse, we have yet to ‘pick it up’ for real.

Yasiin Bey On Politics And Rap, And Weighs In On The Possibility Of Another Mayweather/McGregor Event, “No. HELL NO!” (Video)

Interesting point Yasiin made, speaking on Mayweather vs. McGregorConor just took a page out of Floyd’s book. We saw it. Barking it up, making it an event (rather than a fight, we saw it was NOT a fight).

Yasiin Bey Talks opens up on the Mayweather/McGregor fight, South Africa Travel Issues, his thoughts on Colin Kaepernick’s stance, tearing down of the US monuments, the current state of rap and more!
– HOT 97

Of course, esp. now that we are far removed from the ‘event,’ we can see what Yasiin sees: That FloydConor do not keep doing business (e.g. that was a one-time thing).

Civil Rights Activist James Baldwin At Cambridge University Union In 1965… Speaking Like He Is With Us Today (Video)

Is 400 years of slavery building this country (and oppression thereafter) plus many wars of service not enough to justify our right to have some say in its running… without having to hear, “You can leave it if you don’t love it”… Well, isn’t it? Answer: YES! Moreover, we are not going to be ousted by anyone. We helped BUILD this place ‘they’ say we can ‘leave’ (like it isn’t OURS, too)! Sure, this declaration has an angry tone. So I will let activist/scholar James Baldwin say it. Words from so long ago. Could he have known they’d still be so applicable today?

Prior to the UK release of the Oscar-nominated documentary, I Am Not Your Negro, we take a look at a seminal speech by the film’s subject – writer, essayist, poet and civil rights activist James Baldwin. At Cambridge University Union in 1965, Baldwin debates whether the ‘American dream’ has been achieved at the expense of African-Americans.
– The Guardian

Yeah. And Baldwin even has something to say about the flag in this. So on point.

Taking The Knee: If Terry Crews Was Still In The League, He Would Kneel (Video)

Damn. The preview clip. Crews popped! Got a point though. Football, as we know it in The States, is pretty much just “American football”… The world doesn’t play it that way. We are ‘playing ourselves’ if we think the world gives a good van DAM about the Sunday games or whether we boycott them.

BUT… He does talk some real talk about what everyone in the WORLD would care about… human lives, liberty, love… or the lack thereof. The U.S. nor the NFL, really not loving Black people.

All that and more. Plus Terry with a great perspective on your worth as a HUMAN BEING.

RIP Hugh Hefner (Video)

Hugh Hefner. Playboy Magazine (and related enterprises) founder and mogul… All around player and lover of life… and young ladies (no hate, at all)… has passed at the age of 91… at the Playboy Mansion… of natural causes. A peaceful end to a remarkable life!

Actually, something about the way we saw him live, makes his passing from this mortal plane a bit less painful, doesn’t it? Forever in chill mode, cool parties, packed with the hottest people. A mag loaded with ‘unwrapped’ Eye Candy (that we actually did read for the articles… sometimes). So dope a player, that being his girlfriend took ‘girls from next door’ to Entertainment Television (E!) stardom (shout to Kendra Wilkinson).

And you know how we sometimes struggle to find noble things to say about the departed? Not even a struggle with Hugh Hefner. Black people like 1990 Playboy Playmate of the Year Reneé Tenison and legendary entrepreneur/activist/comic Dick Gregory will likely tell you about how Hefner was a player in a different way in life… hiring Black performers and integrating his Clubs (risking the business in some regions of the country). Yep, Hef was an impact player in the struggle for Civil Rights, a de facto activist, too.

Gonna miss you Hef. Thanks for the good times and good works. And farewell.

#RIPHughHefner
