The Rising SXSW 2011 Showcase (Video)

“Unique Squared, along with DJ Booth.net, 2DopeBoyz, and Last Rights, sponsored a great event at SXSW 2011 at the Dizzy Rooster called, ‘The Rising’. Heavy hitters like El Da Sensei, Big K.R.I.T., and Freeway made this a show to remember. Along with hot up-and-comers J. Nics and Skewby, plus dj sets from Meka as well as M-Phazes himself, the showcase did NOT disappoint.”

White Lines & The Fever (Trailer)

I don’t know if this documentary is out yet, but I’d sure would like to see it. I’ve always heard many old school artists & DJs talk about the legendary Disco Fever. Especially when the Fat Boys talked about getting the opportunity to perform there in the movie Krush Groove. Documentaries like these are always interesting to me because usually its before my time & helps to give us perspective when done accurately. What makes this trailer even more interesting is that it documents the life of DJ Junebug who doubled as a drug dealer who’s life ended tragically.

“This is the story of Junebug’s double life as a DJ and drug dealer. Recalling the Bronx in the early 1980s, this documentary explores the old-school days of hip-hop and the dangerous underworld at the legendary Disco Fever. Never-before-seen footage and interviews with Kurtis Blow, DJ Hollywood, and Sal Abbatiello tell the tragic story of one of the greatest DJs ever.”

A.V.I.U.S. feat. Fashawn & Evidence – ‘Same Ol’ Line’

This song is dope. I’m not gonna write a long ass diatribe, but I’ll let the artist’s camp tell you what its all about below……..

“With the culture of hip hop, comes the making of Legends, the creators of a past-time, and the ones some would even consider inspirations. A year ago on April 19th, a Legend of the Hip Hop Culture passed and left some of us with only a portrait in our memory of what used to be. Today, A.V.I.U.S. of Prime Element is releasing yet another single off of his highly anticipated EP, “For Better or Worse” in memory of the Legend himself Guru, of the group Gang Starr. The song “Same Ol’ Line” features one Emcee who will one day be a Legend himself, Fashawn (XXL freshman class of 2010) and another in Evidence who with Dilated Peoples have already been considered one of the best Hip Hop groups of all-time. With this single, which was produced by Es Nine, A.V.I.U.S. proves that trends are just that, and the key to success is hard work and a straight and narrow path towards whatever achievements you may garner. Here we are ladies and gentleman… Prime Element presents to you “Same Ol’ Line” feat. Fashawn and Evidence.”

Studio Session Leak: Nonku Phiri – ‘We All Try’ (Frank Ocean Cover)

This is definitely unmastered, but I liked it so much I figured i’d post it. South African artist Nonku Phiri rocks over Slum Village’s classic ‘Climax’ instrumental & delivers a cover version of Frank Ocean’s stand out ‘We All Try’ from his dope ass album ‘Nostalgia, Ultra’. I like what Nonku Phiri did with this & hopefully she’ll come back with a mastered version but I can rock with this for now.

Happy Anniversary: Outkast – ‘SouthernPlayalisticadillacmuzik’

Today marks the 17th anniversary of Outkast’s 1994 debut album ‘Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik’. I remember back when this album dropped I was still doing a hip hop radio show near Philly. I was feeling several key songs on the album back then like ‘Crumbling Erb’, ‘Get Up Git Out’, ‘Ain’t No Thang’, ‘Hootie Hoo‘, & of course ‘Players Ball’. thought it was a cool debut album from a group from a city not yet known for its abundance of quality hip hop acts. It was one of those albums that made me take notice, but I had not converted into a full fledged fan at the time. Outkast’s ‘Atliens’ album was the album that made me a full fledged fan, but there is no doubt that their debut album set the bar high for southern hip hop at the time. Many great hip hop albums dropped in 1994 & Outkast was hanging with the ‘big boi’s’ (pun intended) in the music industry in the competition for ears & car stereo systems. A bar that only Outkast themselves could only surpass with their subsequent releases of ‘Atliens’ & ‘Aquemeni’ in ’96 & ’98 respectively

Pusha T – ‘Can I Live’ (Video)

Pusha T drops another video less than a week after the ‘My God’ joint dropped. The last video was featuring Dollicia Bryant, but this time around Pusha T appears to have enlisted alotta ‘Beckys’ on his boat. I guess he’s ‘tasting the rainbow’ with the ladies in these clips.  Can’t be mad at an equal opportunity playa playa.  Hopefully he’ll keep more videos coming from the Fear Of God Mixtape.   I would personally like to see visuals for ‘Alone In Vegas’, ‘Touch It’ featuring Kanye West, & ‘Open Your Eyes’……

Tez McClain – ‘Untitled’ (Video)

Atlanta emcee Tez McClain just dropped some visuals for this untitled joint produced by LT Moe for all the heads. After being on the road heavy & gaining more attention from established artists, producers, & even media outlets like MTV, Tez McClain shows that he has no intention of stopping the grind. His story has yet to be completed so for now its ‘Untitled’….

Always representing for the scene, Methuzulah delivers a message for all of us to keep that head towards the sky…nahhhhmean?!

Big K.R.I.T. Performs ‘Players Ballad’ With Raheem DeVaughn In D.C. (Video)

This is one of my favorite songs from Big K.R.I.T.’s new ‘ReturnOf4eva’ album. I’ve been playing it for the last few weeks on the radio show too if y’all have been following. It was only right that if Big K.R.I.T. was in D.C. he’d bring out Raheem DeVaughn to join him onstage. I’ve been enjoying Raheem DeVaughn’s ‘Heemy Taught Me’ mixtape that just dropped too.  They need to drop a hot video for this joint because these two ‘playas’ are winning right now with this song……

Dead Prez – ‘The Beauty Within’ (Video)

Dead Prez flipped B.O.B.’s ‘Nothing On You’ for their Revolutionary But Gangsta Grillz mixtape fairly well. I’ve given this particular song some run on the radio show & now more than a year later Dead Prez drops a new  video for this joint. I’m not mad at artists dropping videos for mixtape or album tracks because it often breathes new life into a project. I’m just not sure about artists waiting years to drop a video for good album tracks. I guess better late than never though…

N.O.R.E. – ‘NORE Shot Somebody’ (Video)

I like this joint right here…it has a likkle reggae flavor that works….Not sure if the song is indirectly addressed to Prodigy considering he’s on the sample & all of the recent issues with his new book.

Kaya – ‘Imperfections’ (EP)

Over the weekend I ran across this good song called ‘Why Don’t We’ from Toronto native Jessica Kaya. I believe she’s dropped her first name & is going by the name ‘Kaya’ from a professional standpoint from here on out. I didn’t know much about her, but upon my initial find of the song I had it on repeat multiple times.  Too many to give an accurate count. After searching further I found that the song was apart of a free EP that she released called ‘Imperfections’. The title is suitable as she claims to have released these joints as unfinished drafts &  incompleted works. Could have fooled me because these joints sound like ‘perfect imperfections’. Listen or download the project from the link below….
